The doctor of the future will give no medicine but will interest his patients in the care of the human frame, in diet, and in the cause and prevention of disease.” ~Thomas Edison

What is a Holistic Health and Wellness Coach?

A holistic health and wellness coach is a trained professional who takes an integrative approach to diet and lifestyle, helping clients improve their overall health and well-being. (Source: AFPA) A holistic health coach guides clients in living more mindfully, reconnecting with their bodies, and prioritizing self-care for a healthier, happier life.

These coaches look at the whole person—mind, body, and spirit—by assessing nutrition, fitness, relationships, spiritual beliefs, and more. Holistic health is not a one-size-fits-all approach. Every client has unique needs, and you, as the client, are always in control of your wellness journey.

For instance, one client may need help with body image to gain the confidence to attend gym classes, while another may want to explore ancient healing methods, like herbalism, as an alternative to pharmaceutical treatments, in consultation with their licensed healthcare provider.

What Holistic Health Coaches Do (and Don’t Do)

While holistic health coaches are experts in their chosen wellness niche, they are not licensed nutritionists, registered dietitians, or certified personal trainers—unless they hold those credentials. Holistic coaches also do not act as licensed healthcare providers or therapists, and they do not diagnose or treat mental health conditions. Those areas should be addressed by respective licensed professionals.

Like life coaches, holistic health coaches guide, encourage, and consult with clients to support healthy habits and help them reach their wellness goals. The focus is on empowerment and accountability.

Holistic Health/Wellness vs. Holistic Nutritional Coaching

While these terms are sometimes used interchangeably, they are distinct. Holistic health and wellness coaching is similar to life coaching, where the emphasis is on assessing your current situation and identifying meaningful changes you want to make to improve your health. In this model, you are in the driver’s seat. Your coach acts as a guide, helping you determine the best long-term strategies for your life, but you set the direction, create your goals, and track your progress.

In contrast, holistic nutritional coaching takes a deeper dive into your health history and current challenges. Here, your coach will actively provide specific advice and direction related to your nutrition and health. However, you remain in control, making decisions about which recommendations to follow.

One thing we emphasize: you are accountable for your progress. We celebrate your successes, but the credit for your achievements is all yours!
